During the first weeks of school, I have all of my students complete a getting to know you interview with a partner. It is formatted in the way that many social media profiles are; and immediate plus with my students! This is such a great tool to get the students thinking! I have them partner up with someone from a different grade, or someone that they don’t know well! It breaks the silence, and it gives me a ton of insight into how my students will learn. Here are a few questions that I ask from that survey! I thought I would answer a few to give some insight into my joys, hobbies, and interests. I attribute OGMS teacher Stephanie Davis Querns with the creation of this task! She gave me this project my first year at OGMS and it is fantastic!
What was your favorite food when you were a child?
I’ve always been a lover of food. Growing up in a traditional southern family, food more than just a meal, it is the
strengthening of culture and family. I can think of a ton of favorite foods; I’m a foodie by heart, but my mother, grandmother, and great aunt all make fantastic variations of Chicken and Dumplings. This simple dish is often made from the leftovers of a chicken, a homemade chicken stock, and enhanced with simple spices, and a dumpling made from a 2 to 1 ratio of flour and water. Simmered all day, this comfort food at it’s best!
What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?
As a teacher and lover of music, it is so hard to chose 1 “most played” song. I usually go through phases, but my students all really love OneReuplic. Counting Starts from Native is just phenomenal!
What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” - Berthold Auerbach
What’s your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?
I’m not extremely athletic, but I’ve always loved nature. I love gardening and landscaping and outdoors entertaining. Indoors, I love cooking and throwing get - togethers with family and friends!
What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
I have hardwood floors and an energetic dog. They don’t mix well. I despise cleaning them!
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
I love my students, and I spend a great amount of time with them, but the weekends (when we aren’t competing or learning choreography) are the best! It’s so rewarding to enjoy a lazy Saturday!
What sound do you love?
I love listening to my students sing; even more so when we master a difficult passage of music!
